Next Labour government to end academisation and free schools
In her speech at Labour Party conference in Liverpool tomorrow
(Monday), Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner will announce
that Labour will stop schools being converted into academies and
scrap the free schools programme, while bringing existing academies
back into an integrated National Education Service. Pointing to the
lack of evidence that academy conversions under the Conservatives

tomorrow (Monday), Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner will announce that Labour will
stop schools being converted into academies and scrap the free
schools programme, while bringing existing academies back into an
integrated National Education Service.
Pointing to the lack of evidence that academy conversions under the Conservatives have improved results or led to better outcomes for pupils, Labour will pledge to end the current programmes and tackle the fragmentation and privatisation of the country’s school system. Rayner will outline Labour’s plans to develop a new regulatory framework for schools with community control at its heart, with national rules applying to all schools, and parents and local communities guaranteed a meaningful and active role in decision-making. Under Labour’s plans, the powers of academy chains will be reined in and local authorities with the responsibility to find school places will be given the powers to provide them, including commissioning new school places, building schools and enforcing admissions rules. Labour also published data showing that the number of ‘zombie’ academies waiting to be re-brokered has doubled to 124.
