The Justice Committee is holding its second evidence session as
part of its inquiry into Prison Population 2022: planning for the
future on Wednesday 11 July 2018 at 10.00am in The Grimond Room,
Portcullis House.
The purpose of this session is to examine three of the terms of
reference for the inquiry:
- What has led
to the current size and make-up of the prison
population? 
- To what extent
are these factors taken into account in prison population
projections?
- What impact
does reducing reoffending by existing prisoners and those under
the supervision of probation services have on the size and
make-up of the prison population?
More specifically, the Committee will have the opportunity to
discuss:
- The impact of
changes in sentencing legislation, sentencing guidelines and
social factors on sentencing trends and the use of
imprisonment
- The nature and
value of research on the effectiveness of sentencing
- Potential
measures for managing effectively the predicted growth in the
prison population.
