Mr Speaker:...After leaving school at 15, he began his political
journey as a shop steward for Rolls-Royce aero-engineers.
In the 1970s, he became an organiser with the National Union of
Public Employees, and after a period as a Labour councillor, he
became Member of Parliament for Glasgow Springburn in 1979. He
subsequently served for three decades as Member of Parliament for
his people, to whose wellbeing and to whose advance he was
