Advance notice: Debate on safeguarding children and young people in sport

Safeguarding children and young people in sport will be the subject of a debate in Westminster Hall next Wednesday, May 1. 

The debate has been proposed by Bambos Charalambous, Labour MP for Enfield, Southgate. One of his constituents, Ian Ackley, was raped and abused by football coach Barry Bennell in the 1980s and the purpose of this debate is to move for steps to be taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Mr Charalambous will propose tightening regulations and closing loopholes in sport - particularly relating to coaching and unregulated activity - and other positions of trust. 

Rosena Allin-Khan and Tracey Crouch will be responding for the Labour and Government sides respectively and Ian Ackley will also be present on the day.
