Schools in Wales to train teachers to deal with the effects of childhood trauma

It comes after a pilot project at three primary schools in Bridgend county.

Welsh teachers will be taught to support pupils who suffer negative and traumatic experiences as young children.

Commenting, Shadow Education Secretary, Darren Millar, welcomed the news.

He said:

“Any experience of trauma during childhood will have a profound effect on children, so today’s announcement is hugely welcome.

“There’s a lot of good work being done around the world to turn schools into calm, safe environments that help traumatized children to heal.   

“We need to tap into that expertise and ensure that teachers are properly trained to understand and deal with the effects of experiences like abuse, neglect, and the prevalence of mental illness or drug addiction in a child’s home life.”
